I want to thank everyone for your input, it was very helpful and reminded me again why I love Flyertalk so much.
After some thought and consultations with other people in the know, I think I'm going to go to Nicaragua. I found a similar fare (though it's Y down, C back) and I can base myself in Managua and go to Granada and the Masaya Volcano National Park and have a good time.
