A few questions:
1. Where is home? Is it served directly by LAN from either SCL or LIM?
2. Regardless of the answer to question #1, have you called AA to see whether award space is available on LAN to a U.S. gateway, with a connecting flight on AA at the SAAver level to your home airport? (The aa.com website is incapable of displaying award space on LAN flights.)
3. Are low-level Coach award seats available on the SCL-LIM flight? If so, you should be able to secure them for 10,000 BA Avios each. (Amex MR points convert to BA Avios on a 1:1 basis.)
1. Home is BDL. LAN directly services JFK from both SCL and LIM, which we could do if need be.
2. I used the BA website to check for available flights on LAN and came up with nothing.
3. I thought that that was what I saw and would also have to pay the $495. But Fabrizio B saw something different because I did not see that available. I will recheck.
Another side question...seeing as we are not traveling for business, would the immigration officials in Lima find it strange we are only coming in for two days and then leaving the country?
