Encrypting something using today's available methods might only mean a delay of a few years until computing power and advances in NSA spookery catch up. There's quite a bit of evidence to suggest that encrypted data they come across goes into storage where it can remain for a long time, waiting for later technological advances to help speed up the decryption process. Further, the mere act of encrypting your data may cause it to be retained longer, even once it is determined you are domestic, as attempting to keep anything private might mean you're evil, so they will keep it until they can decipher it and know for sure.
