I actually think the initial post in that thread should be somewhat helpful. Essentially,, search one way, segment by segment, making note of those which are available at the low tier. Then piece it all together.
Agreed. Frankly, I don't think there is much more to it than that.

One additional tip, you can add coach segments to a J itinerary, but only by calling. This can be useful if you have a short segment or two that is available in low Y, but not low J.
