No it's not. When a flight is cancelled, it's impossible to fly on it. When a codeshare is cancelled, somebody's made a commercial decision to suit their financial interests (as the OP said, AA are still selling tickets for the flight). I don't see why customers who've booked in good faith should have to deal with the fallout from that.
It is a cancellation as far as the marketing carrier is concerned
It is one of the myriad of reasons for avoiding codeshares unless there is a good reason imo
What AA does is irrevelent since that is another carrier
With a BA flight number, then it is a BA flight - being in the US if it is the 1st flight in the itinerary then it is also BA's baggage allowances and policies which apply
