as a reference, on a business class one way ticket to NY, UA charges 67,500, SQ charges 92,750 and QF charges 128,000.

btw, SQ and QF both charge approx. $500 each way in fuel surcharges. United does not.
Thanks for the simple explanation. I'm a newbie in this. I just looked up the Qantas redemption points from SYD to JFK. I found that amazing too. So for hubby and I to get 1 measly free trip it will cost us nearly $500,000 in credit card spending if we just get the points from a $1 spend. When I think of this I think it is better to pay cash and get discounts or rather than be loyal to an airline for airline miles, just go with the airfare that offers the best value and if we save $500 to $1000, put that towards our "free trip".
