I disagree, due simply to connecting flights. There are plenty of countries around the world where the duty-free limits are much higher, or more loosely defined, e.g. "reasonable amounts" rather than a set quantity.
And as you pointed out you could also travel with friends/partners and divide the goods between you.
It's up to the traveller to know the limits for their destination. The traveller will be the person doing the importation.
