It really only makes sense if you are an extremely infrequent traveler using a credit card with no travel protection who can't absorb the cost of losing the itinerary.
Considering the last ticket I bought had an $8 insurance fee - you must buy hundreds of tickets.

I also don't buy the insurance, but I accept the personal responsibility
that comes with that choice.
