We spent last Christmas in the Czech Republic. Totally enjoyed Prague. I listened to the
Pimsleur Czech language audiobooks, all 16 lessons. The lessons are easy to listen to in the car while running errands. I study the language of wherever I'm going. It's fun and it's a sign of respect. It's also a deterrent to being ripped off.
If I were going to Prague for business reasons, I would study it much more seriously than just those 16 lessons.
Suggestion -
Listen to the language lessons, before hand and on the plane.
Then, think of 5 sentences that you will likely need in your business situation.
Simple things, like
"Thank you for taking the time to meet with me."
Learn and practice those 5 sentences. Write them in a convenient place. No one expects an American to take the time to do this.
Czech and Dutch are 2 of the most difficult languages I've come across.
Czech, because some of the consonant pronunciations simply don't exist in English. (A server's name where we ate in Old Town, main square, Przemic -- ask a Czech person how to pronounce that.)
Highly recommend a private tour in Prague by
Caput Regni.Check out their reviews on Trip Advisor. Being guided around Prague by someone who was 15 years old during the Velvet Revolution is a very special experience.
"The gov't doesn't tell us what to think anymore." We spent 2 half days with them, one in old town (Staré Město), one in new town (Nové Město).
The place where I really needed my Translation app was in the Czech Republic. I had purchased Vocre for the iPhone. However, before we left, my new iPhone 5's speakers stopped working. Google Translate on Android really helped in a crunch with a Czech menu and other translations. Because of the Apple Maps fiasco, I purchased a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which worked GREAT on the trip. I compared them both
here.
Here is a link to a thread I posted about part of that trip to the Europe forum here.
