From what I have read, I make a reservation through CLC. How how does that translate into status/Diamond benefits and/or GP credit? Is it an at the check in desk conversation where one provides a GP #?

The way I do it and the way I understand the program is you make your normal reservation. At check in you show your card and they will supplement your rate with their rate. You can look on their web site or app and see the rates about a week in advance. I can't think of a time when their rate was higher than the rate I was paying but you should always check.
You can create a favorite hotel list on their web site so yo can quickly look up your rates.
