Actual experiences

Now we are home from the long trip I think I would post some updates on experiences as info is so scarce to find in this forum.

At MIA check in, they had some difficulty on our reservation (the AF segments on the itinerary on the outbound showed double-booking in AZ system, we knew that but since both DL and AF insisted it wasn't the case, we would let AZ figure it out at check in.) A manager came over and after huddling for 10 minutes they figured it out and said all was fine. They were able to issue BPs with the 2 AF connections all the way to ARN.

Yes, at MIA they did not care about the carry-ons which ours weighed 13 kg each. So we brought them on board.

At FCO we arrived at the Satellite terminal and cleared the security and such to eventually to T1. The boarding area for the AF connection flight is very far away from the AZ lounge in T1 so we did not use the lounge but wait in the area near the transit desk until the our AF flight finally showed the gate which happened to be one of those that you needed to go downstairs.

On our return AMS-FCO-MIA, the KLM agent said we could not take our carry-ons because AZ only allowed 8kg so the bags were checked. I dont really much care if they are checked on the way home. I do not want bags checked on the way out when there are 2 connection flights to destination where we only stayed one overnight then would go to another country and another country ... So we checked the 2 carry-ons.

OT. For whatever reason, the AZ folks at FCO kept referring to First class when announcing boarding (there is no first class on the AZ flight for goodness sake) and the purser also insisted this was first class when she refused to let a woman who was in 9D accompanying a wheelchair-bound old lady sitting in the middle seat row 5 to stay - she told the woman this was first class and you would need to pay 800 more euro for your business class seat at 9D in order to stay here for the whole flight. Else you must leave as long as we are a cruising altitude.... I fully understand (and appreciate) the purser enforced the rule on seating at the class booked, but this is NOT first class. And I suspect row 9 might be premium economy?

We are not impressed by the Magnifica class seats. The seat looks nice in picture but in reality it is not a good design with the staggering type of seating and not very practical. While they are flat beds, the bottom half especially the end portion, is way too too narrow. Not much storage space to speak of. The design makes the seat close to the window difficult to get into because the opening to go between the seat back of the front and the TV box of the seat behind is rather narrow - one must lift legs high to cross over. I cannot imagine anyone over medium built or weight could move into his seat without some maneuver.

TV screen is way too small and not movable on a fixed position of a big box. Tray table also can only move at a slightly slander angle to allow a bit easier in and out but cannot pull up closer. The only saving grace of them is the fact they are flat beds and that is pretty much about it.
