Thought the driver was in the wrong. But then I read:
Drivers will not issue tickets where ticketing facilities are available - if there is a ticket office or ticket machine at your stop please purchase your ticket in advance of boarding

Technically in that case the Hotel Hoppa shouldn't accept cash either, as there's NX ticket machines in the terminal and they sell Hoppa tickets. Last time I checked it's actually 50p cheaper to buy Hoppa tickets from the machines and they take cards (incl Amex) whereas the driver is cash only.

Personally I think drivers should take cash fares where feasible.
