It depends entirely on how much you value potentially quicker immigration clearance. If you are approved, you will be able to use SmartGate in Australia which will speed you up (though arriving from NZ you won't get the same advantage you might coming off a flight from KUL as most passengers will be SG eligible). NZ also allows Global Entry members to use a special lane at AKL. It will also speed you up on return to the US.
Whether that (plus PreCheck) is worth it is personal. I probably wouldn't do it unless I knew I'd get benefits again out of my $100.
