My story is just a bit different. I showed up for a reservation that was made for exactly one month before. I had no idea until I checked in.

I said "Oh, well, I guess I paid my stupid tax. Do you have availability?" She said yes, and booked the room. She said she would tell the manager.

The next morning I was told that since I would be staying 4 days anyway they would extend a one time forgiveness of the no show fee.
