The plastic ones work just fine, at least on California Bay Area variety windshield frost.
In that case, I use something that doesn't have any credit card number on it, past or present, like an old Safeway card or something. I keep it in my car's center console.
For Wisconsin ice storm variety ice, I'd go for a real ice scraper.
Back on topic: I've sharpened the edges of my expired CSP card using a knife sharpener, mounted it on a nice wooden handle using a couple of #8 bolts, and am ready to use this preparation to excise a certain part of my identity thief's anatomy, resulting in a dramatic reduction in his testosterone levels. But first I need to find him.
That assumes a
couple things.
Said device may be useful for removing old registration stickers off a license plate.
