As a CX DM I have once in a while been allocated an F seat even when F was not sold but never in advance but only on online check in or at airport check in. On other occasions I had to slum it in J and F was closed off completely and I even got a nasty look from the ISM once when I used the F toilet - naughty me! I think no harm to ask at check in. As always they will be more flexible if the flight is full/oversold.
This changed recently. in the past it was that way
Of course if the cabin is empty they might close it completly
