I had a paid I ticket and they gave me two options, downgrade (with full J service) and 500€ Visa card or the next day flight.

Since I believed that I qualify for the full EU compensation I took the 500€ since I thought this would only be a part of my compensation - later I had to learn that company rates do not qualify.

I talked to my AY sales rep about this, the answer was more or less, that she do not understand why they make the rules like this. But the Helsinki office confirmed that the staff in BKK did everything regarding to the rules.

And yes I was AY Plat at that time, with 1 Million++ points on my account.
