Not planning to use a hotel could raise questions whether you have sufficient funds.
I did TWOV in PVG in April as well, and I just wrote "staying with friends" in the form. Surprisingly, it did not made them checking me further. Because "friends" were actually in Jiangsu province, I was lucky enough. Definitely wasn't my smartest idea ever, should have just picked on of the hotels in Shanghai that I've stayed before, I seriously doubt they would double-check with the hotels if any reservation is on my name (plus, you could always argue that you're going to reserve your room just upon arrival, as it's not mandatory to have a reservation booked already)

If you want to be 200% sure, just book a super-cheap hotel (I guess there is still some cheap-cheap place to be had for under 100 RMB) even if you never intend to use it - or actually use it to crash down after partying. I never found Shanghai to be a great place for party (mostly only over spoilt Chinese rich kids, or arrogant foreigners, waaaaaay overpriced drinks) - but there had been some good bars recently coming up. Even though I prefer some of the bars in Nanjing. Especially the Australian bar about 200m from the Sheraton is offering decent drinks and food. (Or just crash in one of the various BBQ locations )
