I think on longhaul, it's generally a good idea to have at least two senior crew members onboard. Just look at the A380, there's 303 seats in Traveller (not including WTP) which seems like a large aircraft in itself. A motivated Purser/Cabin Supervisor (or CSL/FTCSM in BA lexicon) is invaluable to the smooth running of the service, particularly in the biggest cabin of the aircraft. I don't see any evidence of the role going from onboard, but do see the introduction of a framework and title change from Purser to CSL as not only shaping and defining the role onboard but also giving the CSL's a profile to work to. We have a CSM Framework on Mixed Fleet, plus CSD/Purser Profile on Eurofleet and a CSD Framework on Worldwide, so why shouldn't there be a role and set of accountabilities for our CSL colleagues?

I've got to admit I'm not a massive fan of the name CSL, it does remind me of the sofa company. Why Cabin Supervisor or Customer/Cabin Service Supervisor couldn't work is beyond me? I suppose maybe it's about making the distinction between managing and leading. I'm not sure.

Allegedly, main crew on Worldwide, Eurofleet and at Gatwick are going to be offered the chance to apply for direct-entry CSM again on Mixed Fleet from October for a limited period. Not sure whether the take up will be similar to the last time this was offered in 2010 but apparently it is on the cards in time for next summer's timetable.
