This of course is a different situation than the OP's as with a mutual fund account both parties are eligible to earn.

To the OP while sometimes mistakes can happen and you possibly might receive credit usually you will not receive credit for both stays. You can always call and ask to receive credit, you might get lucky especially if they believe that your travel to the other hotel was unexpected or not an attempt to game the system.
