They give them out liberally because Marriott platinum is worth WAY more. and because it's not worth that much.

And the only way you are getting breakfast free, is if you are at a hotel that has a free continental breakfast for everyone.
This guy might be confusing IHG plat with Marriott Plat - which does give lounge access and breakfast. Read the benefits, this is not one of them and has never been one for me in the last few years as a IHG Plat.
So you get internet. :-D and I actually do get some upgrades to bigger rooms or rooms with view. That is true.
I am IHG Plat because of the CC - have never paid for a stay and have only used points the last few years. In the last year three three stays (on points) we had we were upgraded on all, had lounge access on two - and had one very nice upgrade to the top level suite in Seattle! So it can be more than just free internet. YMMV
