It is pretty common for me to see 20+ Y seats available and the site says Economy Full. Even at T-48 hours out. I always assumed it meant Y is full, but the available seats are available because people can't pick those seats [i.e. E+] for free, so they wait until the airport to be assigned a seat.
I was always under the impression that if Y capacity is 112 and there are at least 112 customers booked in Y, it will show full.
My upcoming BWI-EWR flight in a week has seat 2A open, but the system says First Full.
I'll have to watch this today at work to get a clear feeling for it. I assumed that the app that he was refering to was the same as the screens at the gate. I'll watch a few flights today and see if I can figure out for sure what the logic behind it is.
