It can be hard for Japanese people at times, especially those who aren't from the area. Ask someone how to read 「三田駅」 and you're likely to get one of two answers depending on where the person is from.
I went to Hieizan in Kyoto a few weeks ago and my Japanese friend and I couldn't quite read all of the signs at the temples (actually we were both terrible).
