I think you've been overcharged. Pricing some dummy tickets, it looks like the increase should still be £60 each way, £120 round-trip.

If you did this UuA / MFU after you'd already been op-upped on LHR-SFO, I can imagine mechanisms that could explain it, like your suspicion, but I also suspect that it's likely to have been an unintended consequence. Whether one would want to ask for £60 back after having had an op-up on the outbound flight would, I think, be a matter of personal choice.
