did you see LH weighing bags in the boarding area and which airport was this?
this may sound strange from a flyer POV, but kudos to LH for enforcing their rules for a change. i wish all airlines did it. i've grown increasingly tired of seeing passengers abusing carry-on limits. if i have to limit myself to comply with their carry-on limits, then it should apply to others on the flight.
i flew LH JFK-MUC last december and saw two instances where the GAs stopped passengers and they did informal weigh-ins by picking up their wheeled carryon and they knew it was over 8kg. didn't see any enforcement on the return flight.
i would avoid using a wheeled carry-on if you can (the MLC falls within LH's max carry-on size)...you'll get back 3-5 lbs by doing that. pack any heavier items in your personal bag if you can since LH doesn't weigh personal bags [but be mindful of their personal bag size limits].

Of course nobody checks their bags but just shuffles stuff around. In any other airline you could take a ship anchor inside and nobody would care.
