i dont think the MLC was ever meant to be a "personal" item. its marketed as a carry-on. the most versatile, voluminous carry-on.

so much so, in fact, i stopped using it when not packed full, since its a bit "floppy" being so large in dimension.
(anyone wants the *original* best-designed MLC let me know)

i have not however been stopped for it, as a carry on
