I've had 2 operational upgrades with BA in the last couple of years - both CW to F to the US. One of those was as a blue. The second was as a bronze.
Status may come in as a factor at some point, but in my experience they definitely could not be considered a "status benefit".
There are a number of |Golds on here who have reported WT+ to CW op up rates of 75% odd.
If these were suddenly reduced to none, I suspect they would very much consider one of the major benefits of their status has been removed
