I wouldn't say it makes SWUs more useless if they are selling $400 upgrades that book into OU class at check-in. Seems to be random as not many people have reported this. So I guess I wouldn't count on always getting a kiosk offer and if it indeed is booking into OU class then all SWUs and mileage upgrades would have been cleared before they sell those seats. If these check-in upgrades were being offered in J class or something and people on the SWU waitlist, completely different story....but that doesn't seem to be the case
