If we returned to the Hilton HLE, we'd use their shuttle to the airport. Either way involves hauling bags onto a shuttle, I guess. We have been through LAX many times but never stayed at the Hilton.
Note that the Hertz lot is actually a little further from the airport than the Hilton, so you really wouldn't drive to the airport to drop off, you'll drive to the Hertz lot and take their shuttle.
If you go the HLE route, make sure to make reservations for the Hilton shuttle. I've stayed there a few times and on at least one occasion there were more passengers than room on the shuttle and they gave preference to those on their list.
I'm not sure if the HLE is new, or I just didn't realize they had one, but I typically drop the car off at the main Hertz location the night before and walk back to the Hilton, it's less than a mile. I don't think I would do that after dark though.
