I use a Targus mouse with the little USB plug-in. In fact, I leave the plug-in connected all the time, since it's barely noticeable.

The mouse is slightly smaller than a full size mouse, but it still fits in the bag with little effort.

Once you establish the connection (i.e., select the proper channel) it keeps on working through power on/off cycles.

And it's pretty cheap.
