I usually loathe having an empty seat beside me because no conversation/networking, but the one upside is I can watch a movie on my screen and tune the IFE beside me to the flight map.
I too struggle with which to watch--I like both, and to back out of the movie you always run the risk of "issues" getting back to where you were. I'm not much of a "networker" though with seat mates--in fact, fairly rare that I enter into discussion since I'm always into a movie or at work.
I can appreciate the extra weight issue since the screen would need to be large enough for people to see from a distance, but what about a "picture in picture" set up where you could toggle (?) Perhaps a thought for the next version of IFE...
