It is the opposite.

From my understanding the flight will operate as:

HKG->EWR
Depart 6:20pm arrives at 8/9pm same day

EWR->HKG
Depart 1:15am/1:50am arrives at 5:40am +1 day

I agree, the CX flight is timed much better.
