You can hold a reservation, however fares are not guaranteed.

If the fare is removed , then whatever fare now on offer that meets booking requirements will be used. May be able to hod an A seat ( foar example ) but there is no guarantee that the A fare planned to be used will still be available or that it will have not changed in price. If you have a reservation in A class, there may be another A fare that can be used

The exception ( due to US rules iirc ) is 24 hours in the US

There are other risks of just holding rather than purchasing. e.g. if the airline decides to cancel the flight on that day or even drop the route altogether , then there is no protection
