Best values for Air Miles I've found:

YWG to STL. Same zone as MSP and ORD. Saved a lot 5 summers ago.

Most travel within your zone, or a neighbouring zone.

Sporting events. Some sports teams price Air Miles tickets lower than you'd think. This allows them to sell their tickets and still protect their stated cash rate.
