Organised crime gangs are tagreting travellers within the UK so it would suprise me if they weren't doing it on international routes. They identify travellers who have either left baggage /valuablesunattended as the train is pulling into a station they are familar with, or they target people who are sitting with their backs to their luggage and in carriages that enable them to make a quick getaway at the stations concerned.
I'm suprised how often people leave their luggage unattended and unsecured on trains often several meters from where they are sitting and occaisonally in the vestibule area behind a door and out of site. Similarly I see people leave their laptops on their tables whilst they wander off to the buffet car for a coffee and recently saw my MP leave his blackberry on the table as he went walkies.
Perhaps I'm slightly paranoid on these things but once I've indicated to a bunch of strangers in a cabin I have valuable electronics with me - they stay with me when I leave my seat - I've seen people repack them in their bag and again leave the bag.
