You can use your miles to redeem an award and then cancel it - costing 120USD i think. The miles will then be re-deposited back into your AM account with an additional 3-year lifespan.
I've also heard that the ticket is valid for one year if you don't cancel it, but instead reschedule? At least that's what it shows on my redemption ticket:
Tickets for Airline Award travel are valid for 12 months from the date of issue, unless otherwise specified. Tickets are non-transferable. Refund must be made before ticket expiry date (not applicable to partially used tickets) and subject to refund fee of USD120 or 12,000 Mileage Credits charge.
