Just make sure they have sprinklers that work. One would hope that the name-brand hotels would operate to western standards, but I remember that deadly fire they had in Jomtien Beach a number of years ago at a dodgier place that didn't and that had locked the fire exit out of concern that someone would use it to sneak out without paying a bill.
Not to harsh the buzz, but fire department capabilities are very limited and some building owners just do the bare minimum.
Notice all the new apts & hotels have helicopter pads on top now ? A lot cheaper than proper fire suppression engineering. This isn't exactly Sao Paulo, don't see that many helos in BKK (especially considering the traffic).
