They come in different sizes. Most often it's carried in the laptop bag since most of my cords are work related.
It probably takes up more space but the value to me is being able to pull everything out to immediately switch bags or put it on the desk. When I'm ready to go, just drop it back in. There's no time wasted and I know I haven't forgotten anything.
I've had a couple and the one that's about 8"x10" seems to get the most use for me. Not a fan of the tablet wrap version at all.
