Initially i thought i should close off priority club since i don't use it and the annual fee is coming up. However, on 2nd thoughts, I think i may want to convert it into a freedom or any other no-annual fee card just to keep one card permanently with them to maintain a long credit history. Does that make sense and can they convert a card maintaining the credit history length?

IMO keeping one no-AF card with each bank is a great way to build history.
Also, I doubt (99% positive) you cannot change from a co-branded CC (in your case the Priority Club/IHG) to a non-co-branded CC. You will most likely (99%) get the same message as @oceandreamer posted above.
