I was in a similar situation while requesting a miles +copay upgrade to LHR and while they were not able to change the date stamp, they were able to open up upgrade inventory and upgrade me for the flight because of their admitted error. E agent took my information and then either she or someone else called back to confirm upgrade. No sure if it is any different for sticker upgrades.
