It turns out that the flight needs to be completely sold out in all classes. For some reason I always assumed that was not case. After all, what's the point of this guarantee if it means you could buy in a different cabin?
No luck with getting into the waiting list either as 'the flight is closed for wait listing'. Again, what's the point of Gold or even Platinum if you can't even waitlist?
That has always been my understanding that the guarantee of a seat only applies where the flight is sold out; if the flight isn't sold out then you can still buy a seat in another cabin and so benefit doesn't apply
If the flight is closed for waitlisting, then c'est la vie
It does make the benefit more of a marketing item than a real benefit I would suggest
