I've called and upgraded my wife using miles before. If she's a SkyRubles member, they will send her a confirmation e-mail. However, she trusts me with her e-mail password, so I was able to log into her account and "hard delete" the confirmation e-mail before she saw it. She had no idea until she checked in! :-)
