Getting from Lijiang/Shangri-La to Shanghai is usually pretty expensive for a direct (if available) or via connection. Shanghai area is the outlier on this itinerary so how you deal with getting to/from it is the key. Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Xi'an are nearly a wash for cost by bullet train, and Shanghai-Xi'an by overnight train is inexpensive and by plane deals can be had, or use bullet trains, possibly with a stopoff/overnight at Luoyang.
