Onboard

During the flight, my parents were allowed to come over by the purser. She even asked why the rest of the family was in the back LOL.

I’ve always found KLM’s IFE to be good, but this time the selection was disappointing. After Skyfall I decided on Zero Dark Thirty but it was boring and I couldn’t focus on it. The system was responsive and quick enough though.

After the movies I reclined some more and listed to some music on my phone whilst trying to slumber a bit. That didn’t work out… (due to my body clock, not the seat)

Recline Options

The seat gets a lot of criticism on FT, as it seems impossible to sleep in. I get that, as the ‘fully reclined’ position is awkward for a good night’s rest.

I don’t share the opinion that KLM’s seat is awful but maybe I’m not in the position to compare out of own experience and judge on that. (although I also flew Delta’s full flat BusinessElite seats a few days later)

The seat experience was so awfully better than the Economy seats I was used to that I almost could not imagine sitting in Y again (parents did not like that prospect). If this is regarded as an average business class, I am dying to try the top airlines. Not only the extra legroom but mostly the fact you can move (out of your seat) without bouncing to other people.

I found the seat offered plenty of legroom. I had to stretch out a lot to touch the back of the seat in front. Negatives are that there is little privacy, as the seats aren’t in a shell. The seat in front also reclines towards you but luckily no one was sitting in front of me. I also found it a shame the IFE screen is integrated in the seat. It’s not convenient during meal service and the screen is smaller. Furthermore (that might be my problem, being 1,95m) the seat was too short for me. My lower legs were dangling down the legrest.

Legroom

I think the seat is great for daytime flights were you just want to lounge and move freely. I loved the width of the seat, the ample legroom where I could stow my backpack, and the comfortable recline for watching a movie. I am not sure I like the cubed seats like on OS/DL and such, at bit too restrictive.
The seat also offers an adjustable reading light, holder for glasses and a powerport. The powerport of the woman in 3F was broken and I offered her mine. She could really use it as she was not doing anything else than working on her tablet. Well I expected at least one of those in business class .

Reading Light

Snacks and drinks were available any time in the galley. I went up there a few times to stay hydrated (I really drink an awful lot on planes). The purser was also kind enough to give me some water bottles to go on request. Snacks were limited to leftover nut bowls and crackers as only flights over 9 hours have dedicated snack items. I also checked on my family in the back a few times.

Toilets were kept tidy during the flight by the crew. Some passengers, though, could use a lesson in ‘how to flush an airplane toilet’ . Yuk. The toilets were stocked with Rituals amenities but didn’t offer additional perks. I also changed my shirt to something cooler as NY was hot and humid. Shame the toilets did not offer some more space than the Y lavatories.
