Not sure about Delta, but on other airlines this would cause the ticket to be re-issued and a re-confirmation email sent.
A few years back, I tried upgrading my wife's DL ticket to FC and I was told I had to pay the change fee. So I'm sure it's a re-issue and re-confirm.
