First or Business you will very likely need to be ready to book 355 days out (you cannot book any further in advance). So you will need the points in the next 6 months to book a flight in 18 months time.
Currently for MEL-LAX there are a few days 330-355 days out with First or Business availability.
It is not true that availability depends on status as posted above. Upgrades are processed based on status, and Platinum/Platinum One customers may be able to have seats released.

Thanks so much for your response. Gah - 6 months will make this near impossible, unless perhaps I aim for paying part of the fare and upgrading with points as well if that makes a difference? Sorry, for lack of knowledge - I'm attempting to educate myself on here but there's so much info to take in.
How depressing though - 330-335 days out. That is so frustrating. I'm going to try and still aim for my goal, as foolish as it may be. We only get one life, right?
