The camera not airline-specific, but aircraft specific. Those cams are installed by Boeing/Airbus and come with the airplane; they are there for the cockpit to aid in ground operations. Their location is aircraft type-dependent. The integration to the IFE is a customer-pleasing byproduct.
If AA is not connecting the camera to the IFE, total bummer.

Not sure if it's true but I heard that AA used to have nose cameras on the DC10s and that feed was displayed on the video screens during taxi and takeoff. This practice ended after the crash of AA191 on takeoff from ORD.
