I have two seats booked on a FRA-LHR service, but they had to be separate bookings (1 cash, 1 redemption) and the other pax doesn't have status. He's also a minor.
We've got 2JK booked now, would ideally like 10JK if we get the A380. Chances seem slim-to-non-existant as he can't select his own seat. Even I phone the Gold line as soon as the seat map changes (T-48h??) by the time they send a carrier pigeon over to 'Seating' to request a TCP and it gets actioned, we'll probably have flown by then ...
Any suggestions? Should I just pay for him to pick a seat?
Or take him on a quick TP run to get Bronze quickly... 
Hi shorthauldad, the experience varied for the first flights (2 Aug 902/3). Some people were automatically moved to the new map and could pick a seat without issue. I couldn't, nor could a few others and we had to phone (as Gold or Silver members with seat selection pre T-24 capability) to get 'moved' to the new seat mapping. Once this was done, we could select a seat.
However, several of us found we were moved around thereafter anyway!
So, it seemed a bit pot luck I'm afraid for the first flights, hopefully this is now better with subsequent flights?
In any case, get the pax moved over to the new seat maps as soon as you can, thereafter you can at least try to sit where you want or change if you see something open up. One tip that turned out to be of use:
Do NOT print your own Boarding pass. Several people could not get window seats at first but did later on (say around T-22 or T-12 hours).
