I am not sure what advice you are looking for - at this late stage, changing such a non-flexible fare will always be an expensive challenge, to say the least.
My only suggestions are, if you have status with VS ring the gold line - the agents there are more switched on in my experience. I am sure you would, already have done the if you could, so the only other idea is to ask to speak to a supervisor. But, after four hours on hold with the call centre, I would think this has already been done too.
The other option is to swallow the ruined vacation, and get work to spring for another one for you and the family later in the year.
