On a slightly different issue, I have a friend in Australia who is a Vietnam veteran and usually travels where possible in shorts and loose short sleeve shirt.
He ALWAYS sets off the scanners, arches and metal detectors, and wears the casual clothing so they can see the scars where the shrapnel wounds marks are all over his body
